Derby Name: Tights N Sirens
Nickname: Tights
Skater number: 10-18 (Ten- Eighteen)
Teams: Hometeam – Switchblade Sisters / B Travel Team – Tampa Bay Bruise Crew
How long have you been skating? Roller Derby almost two years, but I grew up a “rink rat” at Astro Skate in Tarpon Springs. It was my first job and I met my husband there.
How did you get your Derby name? My husband is a Tampa Police Officer and every derby name that I chose was either taken or too close to a taken name. The name is a play on the police term Lights and Sirens and the 10-18, my number, is the actual “radio code”.
What would your derby theme song OR spirit animal be? Pat Benatar “Hit me with your best shot”
Why did you decide to play roller derby? I have always been a team sport player and seemed to gravitate toward aggressive contact sports. While raising my four children and working around my husband's crazy schedule, roller derby fit. The added benefit is that it involves roller skating which I love. We came to a bout as a family and I fell in love with the sport. I started talking with derby girls about when the next try outs were and my decision was made to join before the bout was over.
Pimp your gear: Bont Hybrid boots with Crazy Skates Venus plates (Chameleon color), Wheels are Radar Bullet 95's and Radar Villians 84's. Knee pads are 187's. Helmet, Elbow pads and wrist guards are Pro Tec's.
What is your worst derby injury? I have always been one to tough it out. One of my favorite sayings is “Pain is Temporary, Pride is Forever.” I have bruised my tailbone, sprained my knee but my worst injury is my pulled quad muscle that I am nursing from a travel bout in Tallahassee.
And your favorite derby moment so far? I have a few and it is too hard to pinpoint an actual fav. Watching my family (Ken Sirens, Belles, Whistles and Woo-Woo's and my son who resists the derby nickname) cheer for me. Getting feedback from other skaters or more veteran skaters that I admire or look up to. In the first bout of this season when my home team Sisters came back to beat my former home team, the Black Widows by a couple points on the final jam of the bout.
What do you want your next step to be in derby? I look to continue to improve in my skating abilities and blocking to the point that I would considered an MVP Blocker in a future bout. I would also like to get over my “fear” of jamming.
What advice would you give to women who want to play roller derby? It is great exercise, its fun and you meet some great people. Get involved as deep as you can and enjoy every it “two minutes at a time”
